WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT

Our book is about lessons learned from  decades of war in U.S. history and the consequences brought on by the draft, otherwise known as conscription.  The Vietnam War (conflict) was the vehicle that brought to light not only widespread corruption associated with conscription but also our political shortcomings as a country. More importantly it shines a spotlight on abuse of power and the racial divide in the United States during the span of three U.S. presidents -- the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations.

ON THE CALENDAR

The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service released its final report to Congress and ended its mission in September 2020 via www.inspire2serve.gov and social media. The commission, headed by Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Joe Heck, a doctor and former Nevada congressman,  was charged with  answering two questions: (1) Is the Selective Service System  still needed?; And (2)  how can the United States of America "create an ethos of service and increase participation in military, national, and public service? "  For more information about the commission and to view the final report and executive summary go to inspire2serve.gov.

MEETING LOCATION AND LIVE-STREAM LINK

The planned live-stream and meeting to discuss the report's findings and recommendations has been postponed, "Since the in-person event has been postponed due to coronavirus, it means there will not be a livestream on Thursday," Jill A. Rough PhD and director of research and analysis for the national commission, wrote in an e-mail Monday, March 23, 2020.

Rough added in her message, "We are exploring additional virtual opportunities, similar to a podcast or webinar, for the weeks ahead."

Later in a second email, Rough  said the commission hopes to reschedule the event for June 25, 2020, "assuming we are back to normal operations at that time!"

Before the COVID-19 pandemic the commission had planned to meet March 26, 2020 , from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30  a.m. Eastern Standard Time, at Sidney Yates Auditorium, Department of Interior, 1849 C Street, NW, Washington, D.C.  20240.

Outlaw League, a novel by Robert Foust with Last Draftees co-author Keith Rogers about baseball in the 1970s and 80s. We take an unvarnished look at baseball through the eyes of a former player and coach who watched the steroid era unfold.

ANOTHER GOOD READ: "AT THE CROSSROADS OF FEAR AND FREEDOM"

image102

Robert L. Green, Ph.D

Michigan State University Professor Emeritus Robert L. Green describes his life of civil rights activism and the fight for racial equality with Martin Luther King Jr.  during the era of reform on the East Lansing, Michigan campus and across America.

From his Foreword in "Last Draftees"

Last Draftees is about conscription, but more so about the corruption that surrounds the act of conscription and how it affects society in a negative light.

It is also about the state of the nation racially and morally; about patriotic love and hatred; about greed and colonization of foreign lands; and about abuse of power and how that corrodes the core of the republic, our democracy. This book is a must read for these very reasons.
